Early Roots

The story of Corn Hill begins in the early 1800s, when settlers formed part of the original Rochesterville community.
As the area prospered, it quickly earned a reputation as a thriving enclave. Some say the name “Corn Hill” reflects its elevated corn fields,
while others trace it to London’s historic Cornhill district.

Victorian Glory

As the mid-19th century approached, Corn Hill evolved into Rochester’s most prestigious address —
earning the nickname “Ruffled Shirt Ward.” Stately Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian homes lined its shaded streets.
Today, many of these stunning residences remain carefully restored, preserving the neighborhood’s timeless character.

Urban Change & Renewal

The 1960s brought significant transformation. Urban renewal projects swept through the area, resulting in the loss of nearly 900 homes.
However, the inaugural Corn Hill Arts Festival in 1969 marked a turning point. Community-led efforts sparked a wave of revitalization,
helping to reclaim the neighborhood’s identity and spirit.

A Neighborhood Reimagined

Today, Corn Hill thrives as a dynamic blend of historic preservation and cultural energy. The annual Arts Festival now attracts thousands of visitors,
while events like the Clarissa Street Reunion honor its deep-rooted African-American jazz heritage. This renewed vibrancy continues to shape the community’s future.
